A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.

The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs locations across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," stated the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the annual first sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder told reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."

This new purchase tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to shatter his own record another time.

A Tradition of High Prices

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its locations across Japan.

The intense energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year starts," shared one happy diner.
