'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Missing Teenagers Await Information After Ski Resort Fire
The relatives of teens lost after a devastating inferno at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are facing an painful period of uncertainty for confirmed information and requesting information about their family members publicly.
The fire devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of New Year's Day. Confirmed images show the ceiling being engulfed in flames as beverages with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have warned that it could take an extended period to formally name the victims of the tragedy, which killed numerous partygoers and hurt another over a hundred. A spokesperson stated on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with work still underway to name the other six.
In the waiting period, relatives have been using social media to appeal for clues about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
Appeals for the Missing
The fate of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, 16, are not yet determined, according to an public plea from his mother.
The who lives of Lutry near Lausanne, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the same in Bern, but did not locate him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. Words cannot describe it," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his friends had been found with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they endured an absolute nightmare."
The Italian government has said that a number of of its nationals remain missing.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has stated that he is dead, without directly referencing the fire, honoring a "talented young man who represented passion and authentic values."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is still pending.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also unaccounted for. His parent explained that he had been on holiday but had gone out with friends and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him informed me they escaped after the fire erupted and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.
One of his educators stated, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, coupled with great responsibility. Every time offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek nationality but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her sibling has published an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the situation.
